In a sunny corner of The Shore Sanctuary in San Diego, California, a little cockatiel named Haku is learning what it means to feel at home.
Saved from a life where his main role was to breed, Haku used to live in a place that was more about making baby birds than being happy.
New Beginnings
When Haku came to The Shore Sanctuary, he started a new life. He was shy and not used to people, and he really needed friends.
An Unlikely Friendship
That’s when Bear came in. Bear is a big, friendly dog who also lives at the sanctuary. With Bear around, Haku began to feel better.
He started talking more and saying things like, “Hey baby, baby, hey baby.” Having Bear as a friend made Haku feel safe.
More Than Just Friends
Bear wasn’t the only friend Haku made. He also became close to Rhea, a goat who was rescued just like him.
Haku had become very caring towards Bear and Rhea, acting like a protector even though he was much smaller.
Transformation
After six months of living at the sanctuary, the people there decided that Haku should stay forever.
That’s when Haku really changed. He wasn’t shy anymore and liked being around people and getting attention.
A Forever Home
Haku’s story shows us that even small animals can have big hearts and make strong friendships.
Now that he’s older, Haku has found the perfect place to spend his days—with friends like Bear by his side and a loving team of people to care for him.
