Layka, a military dog, was shot four times in Afghanistan.
Despite being injured, Layka managed to stop the shooter and save her team.
After her heroics, Layka was left with severe injuries, resulting in the loss of one leg and putting her future in jeopardy.
Julian’s Commitment to Layka’s Future
Her handler, Staff Sergeant Julian McDonald, acknowledged her heroism and was determined to repay the dog who saved his life.
“She was the sole reason why I was living and breathing and able to come home to my son and wife,” Julian said.
He felt a deep sense of debt to Layka for her bravery and loyalty, so he made it his mission to adopt her.
Despite concerns that she was too aggressive for a family, Julian looked beyond that, understanding that her rough exterior was due to her military service.
A Hero’s Welcome Into Family Life
True enough, Layka is a sweet dog.
She quickly became a gentle and loving member of Julian’s family, especially with his young son, Liam.
“The first time I brought her home, my son was just over one year old at the time. She went right over to Liam, submitted, and laid on her back. My son got on top of her chest, grabbed her ears, and put his hand in her mouth, and she wasn’t doing anything. She was just laying there and taking every bit of it,” Julian said, sharing Layka’s gentleness with a toddler.
The dog, once seen as fierce, is now a gentle friend and playmate for the boy.
A Peaceful Retirement for a Brave Dog
Layka’s story goes beyond mere adoption; it’s a celebration of her courage and a plea to give war dogs like her the retirement they’ve earned.
Julian is adamant that Layka and other dogs like her deserve to spend their post-service years surrounded by love and comfort.
“She saved my life,” Julian often says, reinforcing his commitment to giving Layka the best life possible after her years of service.
