In Houston, a lost puppy with a head as big as a pumpkin went through a stunning change.
The once homeless dog, Gus, was found in a sad state but has since become an amazing symbol of hope and healing.

Tough Beginnings
Gus was struggling to walk when rescuers from Houston K-911 found him on the streets. His head was so swollen it weighed his gaze down.
He was skinny and weak, but he did not run away from help, almost as if he knew things were about to get better.
Facing Challenges
Anna Barbosa, who started Houston K-911, met Gus and saw his pain.
“He had no hope, and he was still a puppy, just 10 months old,” she said. Gus’s suffering came from a shoestring tied around his neck that got stuck in his skin as he grew.
He also had a broken pelvis from being hit by a car and had bullet pieces removed from his leg.
Healing and Finding Hope
After a month in the hospital, Anna brought Gus home.
This is where Gus began to heal, and his personality started to shine. The fear began to fade, and Gus turned into a playful and happy dog, full of energy and love.
A Forever Home for Gus
Anna decided to adopt Gus into her own family, where he quickly fit in. His playful spirit and love made it obvious he had found his place.
Anna’s initial plan to find him another home changed as she realized Gus was already where he belonged.
Gus Becomes a Hero
From his tough start, Gus became an inspiring example. Because of his calm and kind nature, Gus won an award for being an incredible shelter dog.
Now, he goes around to schools to talk about his past and teach kids how to take care of animals properly.
