Mildred had a tough life before she met Lee Asher.
When she first came to the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center, she was skin and bones and could barely stand up.
But Mildred didn’t stop fighting for her life, and soon, she’d find someone who’d fight just as hard for her.
Meeting Her Hero

Lee Asher, who runs The Asher House sanctuary right from his home in Estacada, Oregon, has a big heart for dogs that have been left behind or maltreated.
When Asher met Mildred, a thin and weak mastiff, he knew he had to help her.
Heading Home
On the day Asher brought Mildred home, a video shows her slowly walking over to him, shaky and unsure. She was so thin it was clear she needed a lot of care.
But as she got into Asher’s car, surrounded by his other rescue dogs, she seemed to find some peace. She even fell asleep on the way to her new home.
New Friends

At Asher House, Mildred met more new dog friends. At first, her legs couldn’t hold her up for long, and she stumbled.
But after settling in and having some food, she snuggled up with a dog named PomPoms for a nap.
Getting Stronger

Two months passed, and Mildred’s transformation was amazing. She had gained weight and now looked much healthier.
She could walk much better and was even seen running and playing with the other dogs. Asher said she was “sincerely the best gift the universe sent me.”
A Happy New Life

Mildred kept getting better, enjoying swimming and paddleboarding with Asher. It was incredible to see how much she changed with just a little bit of love and care.
The story of Asher and Mildred shows what can happen when you give animals a second chance. It’s about not giving up on those who need help the most.
