Officer Corey Radke of the Caledonia Police Department was finishing up his shift and looking forward to a quiet evening. That changed when he heard a call about a fire nearby. He didn’t expect his day to turn into a daring rescue.
Rushing Into the Fire to Save Lives
Arriving before anyone else, Radke found the family was already safe outside. But their two dogs, Deezel and Norton, were still inside the house, now full of smoke and flames.
Without waiting for firefighting gear, Radke kicked in the door and ran into the thick smoke.
A Surprising Calm in the Middle of Danger
The entire rescue was recorded on Radke’s body camera.
Inside, Radke found Deezel, a twelve-year-old Vizsla, sitting calmly on the couch.
It was strange because the dog didn’t seem to know about the danger and didn’t want to leave her cozy spot.
Radke had to pick her up and carry her out to safety.
Searching for Norton in the Smoke
The smoke was getting worse, but Radke went back in to find Norton, the family’s other dog, a twelve-year-old Dachshund.
Eventually, the smoke became too much for Radke, and he had to leave.
Thankfully, firefighters found Norton hiding under a bed and saved him.
Both dogs were fine, thanks to Radke’s quick actions and the firefighters’ help.
Thankful Family and Community Celebrate a Hero
Radke’s love for animals made him a true hero for risking his life to save two beloved pets.
The dogs’ owners, the Dykstra family, were heartbroken over their house but were so grateful to have their dogs back.
They thanked Officer Radke, who showed that even off-duty, he was ready to help save lives.
Thinking of Lou
Radke rushed to save Deezel and Norton because he cared about dogs just like he cared for his K9 partner Lou.
It was his deep sense of responsibility and care for his canine companion that helped him through the smoke and danger to rescue the two dogs.
“It’s like my dog. It’s part of the family,” said Radke.
When Saving Pets Means Risking It All
Officer Cory Radke’s dash into a burning house to save the dogs shows that people will risk their safety to protect these important members of the family.
This bravery speaks volumes about the kindness people can show to animals, even ones they’ve never met before.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a pet or a stray; when an animal is in trouble, there are people out there who will do everything they can to save it.
