At a graduation ceremony at Clarkson University, a special moment took place that showed the strong connection between people and their service animals.
Griffin, a service Golden Retriever, was honored just like the graduating students and received a diploma next to his owner, Brittany Hawley.
A Journey of Support
From North Carolina, Brittany—who deals with a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)—had Griffin by her side, helping her face everyday challenges.
With Griffin’s help, she was able to go to university and work towards her dream of getting a degree in Occupational Therapy.
The pair were brought together by Paws4People, an organization that matches service dogs with those who need them.
This allowed Brittany to go to school and succeed with the support of her loyal dog.
Independence and Companionship
Griffin did more than just companionship. He performed practical tasks like opening doors and picking up things, giving Brittany a sense of freedom.
He went to every class and became a familiar face around campus, showing the real difference a service dog can make in someone’s life.
Recognition and Celebration
The university decided to give Griffin his own diploma as a way to recognize all he had done for Brittany.
At graduation, he wore a cap and gown and proudly carried his diploma on stage, highlighting his role in Brittany’s college experience.
Beyond Graduation

Griffin has also played a big part in Brittany’s personal life.
He was there when she met her fiancé and was involved in their engagement, showing how a service dog’s impact can go beyond just helping with day-to-day tasks.
Brittany and Griffin remind us of the incredible ways service animals help their owners in school and build a full and happy life.
