Inside Metro Richmond Zoo, a unique friendship has formed between two very different creatures: Kumbali, a sleek cheetah with spotted fur, and Kago, a jovial yellow Labrador.

An Unusual Start

From the outset, Kumbali’s life was a fight for survival.
Being the smallest in his litter, Kumbali had trouble gaining weight and overcoming health issues. The zookeepers, concerned for the little cheetah’s well-being, made the life-saving decision to intervene, providing round-the-clock care to ensure his growth and health.
Yet, for Kumbali, physical health was just one part of the equation – he needed to learn the ways of a cheetah, a lesson his family couldn’t provide.
Then came Kago, an energetic Labrador puppy, who was rescued from a shelter to be Kumbali’s companion.
The zoo staff understood that dogs like Kago could help cheetahs build confidence – a critical component for Kumbali’s development.

In May this year, Kumbali and Kago will celebrate their 9th birthday. Last year, the zoo marked the occasion by surprising them with ice treats filled with meat. The two enjoyed gnawing and licking on their birthday treat
