There’s a surfer in Hawaii’s beautiful waters, but it’s not who you’d expect — meet Hokule’a, a cat who loves the water.
This four-legged friend is breaking the rules and showing everyone that cats can be just as at home on a surfboard as they are on land.
From Shelter to Surfboard
Hokule’a’s amazing story starts at the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Hokule’a was shy at first, hiding under beds and blankets. But soon, he warmed up to his new family.
He would follow his human parents everywhere and didn’t mind getting wet — even enjoying showers with them!
Water-loving Cat
Hokule’a didn’t act like most cats around water.
He didn’t run away from the rain. In fact, he liked it. He’d come back inside completely soaked, which was a surprise for a cat.
Seeing that Hokule’a wasn’t afraid of water, his human parents decided to see if he would like the beach.
First Time on a Board
Hokule’a wasn’t just okay with water — he loved swimming.
When he was taken out on a surfboard, he was immediately comfortable.
So, Hokule’a’s dad made him a safe spot to sit on the surfboard by shaping a boogie board into a little nest. This helped Hokule’a feel more secure as they paddled out together.
Getting Confident
As Hokule’a got used to surfing, he left his boogie bed and started to explore more, walking up and down the board and even jumping into the water by himself.
He was swimming so well that he could move faster than his human family!
Gaining Fans
People noticed this surfing cat and fell in love with his beach adventures, which his family shared on social media.
Everyone is amazed, and comments like this from a YouTube viewer flood in: “A water cat is unusual enough, but to actually swim under water is something else.”
A Bond Like No Other
“Now that we have a third part of our family to share it with, it just makes it that much more special,” Hokule’a’s dad said, appreciating Hokule’a.
Surfing, once just a hobby for the couple, has become a family bonding activity.
Being Open to the Unexpected
Hokule’a’s bond with his human family and his comfort in the waves are reminders that companionship can come in the most unexpected forms.
The key is to pay attention and be open to learning about your animal buddy’s unique personality and preferences.
With patience and observation, you might find that your animal friend has a hidden talent or an unusual pastime they love.
