After a bad storm, a team at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa discovered a lone baby zebra. They named her Modjadji, meaning “rain queen,” and brought her in for care.
In the sanctuary, she has formed an incredible bond with a creature of different species.
The Zebra Gets Better
Modjadji was sick and had been abandoned by her mother. She needed a lot of help, so the people at the sanctuary took great care of her.
As she grew stronger, she made friends with Daisy, an orphaned rhino who had been at the sanctuary since she was hours old, only after hunters had taken her mother.
Healing Each Other’s Wounds
When Daisy met Modjadji, they instantly became close. It seemed like they knew they were both alone and needed each other to survive.
Their friendship made them both feel happier and safer.
One of their caregivers said, “They’ve helped each other heal in ways that we never could have done.” The caregivers noted the positive effects of their bond.
Together in Everything
Modjadji and Daisy love to play and explore together.
Seeing them share meals, play, and rest together makes everyone at the sanctuary happy, and it’s a hit online, too, with their adventure getting views from over 700,000 people.
A YouTube viewer said, “I love how boundless an animal’s capacity to love is. So incredible to see such opposite animals bond like that. Nature is such a rare gift, we should all protect it”
Sanctuary’s Hope
The people at the sanctuary are working hard so that one day, Daisy and Modjadji can live freely in the wild again.
For now, they are happy to keep each other company at the sanctuary.
They are both improving every day. Daisy is now 24 months old and weighs 1000.9 pounds, and Modjadji is getting used to exploring the mountain camp.
Friendship Beyond Species
“Maybe they don’t realize that one of them is a baby zebra, and the other is a baby rhino,” the caregiver said.
The story of Modjadji and Daisy reminds us that friendship has no limits, even between different species.
Their story is a strong example of hope and togetherness, inspiring anyone who understands how friendship can heal.
