My ecology mentor would always say, ‘Learn to read the landscape.’ I take this two ways. One, keep reading words about the natural world. Two, always get better at observing the details and patterns in nature for myself.
Experience:
Leah Markum has taken a holistic approach to nature, exploring through writing, physical experiences, art, and science.
Her writing experiences range from resumes and reports for peers to articles and website copy for companies. She also worked in a university public relations unit dedicated to publishing news and features on research. Now, she focuses on copy and content for the outdoor industry.
To get outside, hiking, canoeing, and taking road trips are a tradition between Leah and her father. Together, they’ve explored much of North America this way. And these days, her camera is her main companion. Photos motivate her to hunt for interesting details that illustrate a scientific concept or raw beauty she can edit or paint later.
As for science, she has read natural history books since an early age and carried that interest into ecological research. One project involved travel to the Fernow Experimental Forest in West Virginia. Even after her formal experiences, she continues to study to feel connected to nature.
