Holly, a three-year-old Giant Schnauzer, faced a mountain lion in her own backyard in La Verne, California,
Holly’s bravery was caught on the family’s security cameras in their Mountain Springs home.
The Night of Bravery

Although the full video is too intense to share, it shows Holly fighting bravely.
The attack happened on a quiet Saturday night when Nicole, the owner, let Holly Jolly out as she always did before bed.
Shortly after, a mountain lion leaped at Holly, pinning her down.
When Nicole’s husband, Steve, heard the noise, he rushed out, yelled loudly, and scared the mountain lion away, giving Holly a chance to run to safety.
Medicine and Extra Cuddles

You can feel the family’s concern for their fur baby.
“She had a lot of puncture wounds, [and] many stitches. They said there was just a lot.” Nicole said, sharing Holly’s surgery.
Holly is recovering well after being taken to the vet and soaked up with extra love from her family. She is enjoying extra cuddles from her family.
Keeping All Dogs in the Neighborhood Safe

Steve and Nicole decided to share the video out of concern for their neighbors’ pets.
Steve said, “We wanted to let all of our neighbors know that this thing (the mountain lion) is out and bold enough to jump in yards and attack a dog almost the same size.”
Holly’s story shows the strength of a family pet and the love of a community that comes together in the face of nature’s challenges.
Coexisting with Wildlife

Thanks to Holly Jolly’s recovery, the people in La Verne now feel more prepared to live safely and respectfully with the wildlife around them.
Neighbor Monique Oldmeadow added, “It’s beautiful, it’s wonderful living in nature, but we have to respect the animals and, you know, just be aware.”
Experts remind everyone to watch their pets closely when they are outside and to stay safe around mountain lions. Make lots of noise and try to look big instead of running away or turning back.
