The Asher House Sanctuary in Estacada, Oregon, is full of stories about animals getting a second chance.
One special story is about Frankie, a shy llama who learned to trust again, thanks to Lee Asher, who runs the sanctuary.
Lee found Frankie at a livestock auction, about to be sold. He stepped in and brought Frankie home, offering him a new life.
“Welcome home, buddy!” Lee greeted him, even though Frankie was initially unsure of his new human friend.
Building Trust
Lee knew he had to be patient with Frankie. The llama was afraid and didn’t know if he could trust people because his old owners had given him up.
Lee took it slow, just being around Frankie without scaring him.
“He’s scared of me. He will love me. I already love him,” Lee said, showing he was ready to wait for Frankie to feel safe.
Lee’s approach was to be calm and give Frankie space. The sanctuary wasn’t just a place for saving animals—it was for helping them heal and feel at peace.
A Special Moment
One day, something amazing happened. Frankie took food from Lee’s hand. It was a big deal because it showed Frankie was starting to trust Lee.
“I was like screaming inside,” Lee shared, excited that Frankie was finally opening up to him.
New Friends
Lee also knew that Frankie needed friends of his kind. When he couldn’t find another llama for Frankie, Lee brought home two donkeys instead.
Soon, they all became great pals, showing that friendship can happen between different kinds of animals.
The Dream of a Sanctuary
The Asher House is more than just a place for animals like Frankie to live; it’s a dream come true for Lee.
He started the sanctuary in late 2020 to honor his dog Stella, who had passed away. Now, it’s a safe place where animals can start over and find happiness.
Frankie’s life at the sanctuary with his donkey buddies is a perfect example of what can happen when you give animals love and a chance to heal.
