Thumbelina is different from most squirrels. She was born in a New York City apartment, and her life has been full of ups and downs.
Luckily, she has a family that cares and will do everything for her.
She’s Different
She took longer to open her eyes, wouldn’t play with other baby squirrels, and was afraid of heights.
As she grew, she gained weight, even though she wasn’t eating more than usual.
It turned out she had a health condition that made her gain weight.
Moving for Health
On Thumbelina’s fifth birthday, Michael noticed something wasn’t right with her mouth, and she needed special care.
It turns out that Thumbelina has odontomas, a benign tumor that grows at the tooth’s root. It is a harmless kind of tumor, but it pushes up into the nose area, causing trouble breathing, pain, nosebleeds, and infection. Eventually, it can take the life of a squirrel.
The care they need is all the way in Florida. So, they decided to move there permanently.
Living Her Best Life
Michael and his wife have created a loving environment where Thumbelina can thrive and be happy.
She spends her days exploring her Florida home, snacking on her favorite foods, and receiving gentle massages that she adores.
They’ve adapted their lives to accommodate her special needs; she brings them endless joy and laughter.
People Care
“It’s not our pet, it’s our daughter,” Michael’s wife said.
Aside from Thumbelina’s family, her life has touched many. Her online fans also have supported her through a fundraiser that helped with her medical bills.
Michael and his wife appreciate everyone’s kindness and express their gratitude by posting, “Thank you all so very much for your messages, texts, calls, prayers, and kind words. They mean more than you know.”
Deeper as Human Connection
Thumbelina’s story shows the amazing things people will do for their animal family members, whether they have two legs or four, feathers or fur.
It also shows that caring for an animal doesn’t just improve their lives—it also brings joy and love into ours in unexpected ways.
