The Aleutian Island collared lemming is one of the least-seen mammals in Alaska, known almost entirely from museum specimens collected decades ago rather than from living observation. It shares the collared lemming genus's trick of turning white and growing shovel-like claws for winter, but is restricted to a handful of treeless Aleutian islands and nowhere else. The near-total absence of records below isn't a sign the species has vanished. It reflects how rarely anyone surveys these remote islands, and the IUCN lists it Data Deficient for exactly that reason.

An island endemic known mostly from old specimens

This lemming’s entire range is a handful of islands in the Aleutian chain, principally Unalaska and Umnak, far out along Alaska’s volcanic island arc. Unlike many Alaska mammals with a steady trickle of modern photographs and citizen-science sightings, this species has essentially none. What’s known about it comes overwhelmingly from museum study skins collected on past expeditions, not from field observation of living animals. That’s an unusual gap for a mammal this far into the twenty-first century. It’s exactly the kind of gap the IUCN’s Data Deficient rating exists to acknowledge.

Sharing the genus’s winter trick, on remote ground

Like its northern collared lemming cousin, this species almost certainly molts to a white winter coat and grows the enlarged, double-clawed front feet Dicrostonyx uses to dig through snow and frozen ground, a trait shared across the genus. It lives on treeless, wind-scoured island tundra shaped by the surrounding Bering Sea and North Pacific, cut off from mainland Alaska by open water for thousands of years.

Why “no records” doesn’t mean “gone”

Zero recent observations sounds alarming, but for this species it says more about survey effort than about the animal’s status. The Aleutian Islands are logistically difficult to reach and rarely visited by researchers equipped to survey small mammals. An absence of fresh records is the expected pattern for an island endemic with almost no dedicated fieldwork behind it. Genuine population decline and a simple lack of looking produce the same blank spot on a map, and right now there isn’t enough data to tell which one this is.

A life history borrowed from its mainland relatives

Direct study of this subspecies is thin. Its documented life-history figures, a roughly three-week gestation, litters of about three young several times a year, and a maximum recorded lifespan near three years, are drawn from the broader collared lemming genus rather than from population-specific research on the islands. They’re a reasonable proxy, not a guarantee, for an animal this rarely studied firsthand.
