The complete county distribution, spread across 63 Michigan counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

American badger records in Michigan cluster around Huron-Manistee National Forests, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and the Kirtland’s Warbler Wildlife Management Area, all northern Lower Peninsula sites with the open, sandy, prey-rich ground badgers favor for digging. GBIF’s 206 records outnumber iNaturalist’s 46 by more than four to one, suggesting most documentation comes from trapping and survey data rather than photographs.

Reports rise from May through August, tracking the warm months when badgers are most active above ground hunting ground squirrels and other burrowing prey. NatureServe ranks the species S4, Apparently Secure, in Michigan, but the badger’s low, thinly spread record count and its reliance on open grassland make it one of the harder Michigan mammals to actually see.
