Minnesota’s occurrence databases hold 337 records for the American marten, most of them from Superior National Forest and the rest of the state’s northeastern corner. That’s a records footprint, not a headcount of every marten working the forest.

Back from a near-total loss

Minnesota’s marten were trapped and logged out of existence by the early 1900s, as old-growth conifer forest across the north fell to the timber industry and unregulated trapping picked off what animals remained. The state reintroduced marten into Superior National Forest starting in the 1950s, and the animals recaught the region’s maturing conifer stands as the forest grew back. Today’s Arrowhead marten are essentially the descendants of that release, confined to the boreal forest of Superior National Forest, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and the country around Voyageurs National Park.

A forest specialist that needs deadwood

Marten den and hunt in forest with real structure, standing snags, downed logs, and thick brush piles that shelter mice, voles, and squirrels close to the ground. That’s why they stick to mature stands rather than the open cutover or young regrowth found elsewhere in the north woods. Records peak in January and February, when tracks crossing fresh snow make a marten far easier to detect than it is once summer’s understory fills in.

Status in Minnesota

NatureServe ranks the marten S4, apparently secure, in Minnesota, and it’s native to the state. That rating reflects a real recovery from local extinction, built on decades of regrown conifer forest across the Arrowhead.
