American mink travel the edges of marshes, rocky streams, and wooded lakes at Montezuma, in the Adirondacks, and around the Finger Lakes. Watch for a long, low animal bounding along the bank; narrow tracks and dark, twisted scat on prominent rocks are useful signs when the mink stays hidden.
They are active throughout the year, with the strongest New York record from November through January. Sparse cover and tracks in snow can improve winter detection, so the peak does not necessarily indicate greater abundance then.
