A conifer holdout in a hardwood state

This squirrel needs a dependable cone crop, and that means spruce, pine, or fir rather than the oak and maple that cover most of Connecticut. The state’s best pockets are the hemlock ravines and white pine stands of the western upland hill country, plus the mixed conifer and hardwood forest around Meshomasic State Forest and the river-island woods of Selden Neck State Park. Away from those conifer patches, records thin out fast.

Heard before it’s seen

A red squirrel gives itself away with a rapid, rattling chatter aimed at anything that gets too close to its territory, a habit that sets it apart from Connecticut’s far more numerous eastern gray squirrels, which stay quieter and don’t defend one cache site so aggressively. That cache, called a midden, holds the cut cones the squirrel depends on through winter, built at the base of a favored conifer and guarded through every season.
