A fox that changes with the tundra
An Arctic fox in deep winter can seem made from the snow itself. Its coat grows dense and white, its ears look short and rounded, and even the soles of its feet are furred. That compact shape holds heat better than the longer legs, larger ears, and leaner outline of a red fox.
Snow-white isn’t the only Arctic fox color. Most white-morph animals trade winter white for a thinner brown or gray summer coat. Blue-morph foxes remain dark, ranging from charcoal to chocolate brown. The change can make the same species look surprisingly different from one season to the next.
The tail is another useful clue. It’s thick enough to wrap over the face while the fox rests, cutting heat loss in exposed country. In summer, a worn coat may look patchy as the heavy winter fur comes free. That scruffy stage is normal, not a different kind of fox.

Two food webs, one quick hunter
Arctic foxes make a living from whatever the far north offers. Inland, lemmings and voles can anchor the diet. A fox listens for movement beneath grass or snow, then pounces down with its forefeet. Birds, eggs, insects, berries, and carrion widen the menu when small mammals are harder to find.
Along the coast, the choices change. Foxes take seabirds and eggs around nesting colonies, search shorelines, catch fish when they can, and scavenge remains left by larger hunters. They also cache extra food under stones or near dens. A hidden egg or scrap of meat can matter later, when weather closes in and fresh prey is scarce.
This flexibility helps explain why many records sit close to sea level. It doesn’t mean foxes avoid higher ground, and reports aren’t a population count. Coastal travel routes, settlements, research stations, and easier access all shape where people notice and record them.

Old dens become family landmarks
Spring brings Arctic foxes back to established dens on open tundra, raised banks, and rocky slopes. A den may have many entrances linked by tunnels. Good sites can remain in use for generations, so one grassy mound may hold a family history stretching far beyond any single fox.
Pairs raise their young together, and an older female may sometimes stay as a helper. Litter size follows food conditions closely. When lemmings are plentiful, parents can support more pups. In lean seasons, fewer young survive the demanding first months.
The pups begin above ground while summer food is at its broadest. Play sharpens stalking, pouncing, and social signals, while adults make repeated food trips. By autumn, the family loosens. Young foxes may travel far in search of feeding grounds, and adults don’t retreat into hibernation when winter returns.
Active whenever opportunity appears
Long Arctic days and nights don’t divide neatly into a familiar daily schedule. Arctic foxes can travel, hunt, or scavenge at many hours, resting when weather and feeding allow. Reports rise sharply in the bright part of the year, but that pattern also reflects longer daylight, field seasons, and easier human travel.
Movement is one of the species’ strongest answers to uncertainty. Some foxes remain near a dependable coast or denning area. Others roam widely when prey drops, following shorelines, sea ice, or broad tundra corridors. A small body doesn’t prevent a fox from covering remarkable ground.

When red foxes move north
The Arctic fox remains widespread around the circumpolar north and is listed as Least Concern. That global label can hide sharp local problems. Food cycles, disease, trapping history, and changing snow and sea-ice conditions don’t affect every population in the same way.
Red foxes create a growing pressure in some northern areas. They’re larger and can take over dens, compete for food, or kill Arctic foxes. Warmer conditions and expanding shrubs can favor red foxes farther north, turning a shifting climate into direct competition between the two species.
In the United States, the Arctic fox story is chiefly Alaskan. Its future depends on more than cold alone. Productive tundra, seabird colonies, small-mammal cycles, secure den sites, and connected coastal landscapes all help this specialist keep its flexible way of life.
