How to recognize a bearded seal
Look for the whiskers first. They’re dense, pale, and long enough to droop well past the chin, and they’re unmistakable even at a distance. The head looks almost too small for the body. That’s a useful giveaway next to the rounder-faced ringed and spotted seals sharing the same ice. Adults are a plain grey-brown, sometimes with a rusty stain on the face from iron-rich sediment stirred up while feeding. The foreflippers are square and paddle-like, built for digging rather than fast swimming.
Where it lives on Alaska’s sea ice
Bearded seals favor shallow water over the continental shelf. They rarely dive deeper than about 330 feet, because that’s where their food is. They haul out on drifting pack ice rather than ice fastened to shore. That keeps them close to open leads and cracks they can dive through. As the ice edge shifts with the seasons, the seals shift with it, tracking the boundary between ice and open water rather than one fixed stretch of coastline. That tight link between ice and seal is exactly what a warming Arctic threatens to break.
Foraging by touch, not by sight
Most seals hunt fish in open water. A bearded seal spends much of its time working the seafloor instead, sweeping its whiskers side to side to locate hidden prey by touch. Clams, crabs, shrimp, and small bottom fish make up most of its diet. It doesn’t need clear water or bright light to find any of them. That bottom-feeding habit also explains the species’ size. It’s the biggest of the Arctic’s “true” seals, and an adult can outweigh a ringed seal several times over, because tearing shellfish out of mud rewards bulk and strength more than speed.
The underwater song
During the spring breeding season, male bearded seals produce one of the most distinctive sounds in the ocean: a long, warbling trill that starts high and slides slowly downward. A single call can last close to a minute. Researchers can pick out individual males by the shape of their calls. The song seems to work as both a territorial broadcast and a courtship display, and it’s loud enough to carry for miles underwater. That range matters in a habitat where seals are spread thin across huge stretches of ice.
Pups born on the move
Bearded seal pups are born directly on drifting ice in spring, and they can already swim within hours. That head start matters, because the ice beneath them can break apart at any time. Nursing is brief compared with many mammals. Pups start supplementing milk with solid food remarkably early, another adaptation to a platform that won’t necessarily still be there next week.
A meal for polar bears and orcas
A bearded seal’s size makes it a serious target, not an easy one. Polar bears will take a bearded seal when they can, but a resting adult is heavy, alert, and often within a body length of open water. Orcas hunt them too, especially where pack ice breaks up into looser floes that a pod can maneuver between. That predation pressure helps explain why bearded seals stay so wary on the ice, lifting their heads every so often even while resting.
Conservation status and a shrinking platform
The IUCN lists the bearded seal as Near Threatened. That status has less to do with hunting or conflict with people and more to do with the ice itself. The species depends on drifting pack ice for resting, pupping, and access to shallow foraging grounds. The long-term retreat of Arctic sea ice is the central threat to its future, even in years when the population itself looks stable.
Reports of bearded seals climb sharply in late spring and early summer, right when pupping and the underwater trilling display are both underway. That isn’t a sign the seals appear from nowhere. It reflects longer daylight, easier boat access to the ice edge, and animals hauled out in the open rather than diving between breathing holes. Records thin out again once summer breaks the ice apart and seals scatter toward deeper water.
