The Bonneville kangaroo mouse is a small Great Basin seed gatherer newly recognized apart from the dark kangaroo mouse. Oversized hind feet power its two-footed hops, while external cheek pouches carry food back to a burrow without wetting it. Records trace the Bonneville Basin and nearby western valleys, but older observations may retain the former name, making location and taxonomy as important as color when interpreting its range.

A pale mouse that moves by hopping

Large hind feet give this tiny mammal a kangaroo-like hop. The long tail steadies quick turns and helps control a landing. External cheek pouches carry dry seeds without wetting them, allowing the mouse to gather food quickly before eating in cover.

It was formerly grouped within the dark kangaroo mouse. Recent work recognizes the eastern, pale-bellied form as the Bonneville kangaroo mouse. That change is young, so older books and specimens may still use Microdipodops megacephalus for animals now placed here.

Color can help, but it isn’t enough by itself. The animal’s pale underside and regional range matter alongside finer skull and genetic differences. A photograph without a reliable location may not settle the identification.

Loose ground in the western Great Basin

Records come from southeastern Nevada and west-central Utah, following the Bonneville Basin and nearby Great Basin valleys rather than the whole western desert.

The animal favors open shrubland with loose sandy or fine gravelly ground. It doesn’t need dense cover, but it does need soil that can hold a burrow. Salt-desert shrubs and scattered grasses provide both seeds and broken patches of shelter.

A burrow buffers daytime heat, cold nights, and dry wind while keeping stored food below ground. Separate chambers can serve as nest space and caches. Remaining underground through the day also reduces contact with surface hunters.

Seeds, darkness, and careful water use

This mouse emerges at night to collect seeds from grasses and desert shrubs. It gets much of its water from food and limits daytime moisture loss underground. Efficient kidneys and dry food storage suit a landscape where free water is unreliable.

Brief collecting trips reduce exposure to owls, snakes, foxes, and other desert hunters. Hopping can carry the mouse rapidly across open ground, but it also pauses and changes direction. The tail helps keep those sudden movements balanced.

Only a handful of recent photo observations appear in the seasonal record. That shortage says more about a tiny nocturnal animal’s detectability than about its seasonal presence. Museum specimens and careful trapping remain important sources of range evidence.

Why a narrow range matters

The species is poorly known and hasn’t yet received a separate global conservation assessment. Its recent split from the dark kangaroo mouse also means older studies may combine more than one species. Population trends can’t be read cleanly until records and specimens are reassigned under the newer taxonomy.

Fire, invasive grasses, development, and heavy surface disturbance can change the open shrub-and-soil pattern it uses. Occurrence totals show where collectors and observers have found animals, not how many remain. Protecting connected patches of suitable loose soil matters, but better surveys are still needed to define the species’ limits and status.
