Coypu, also called nutria, are confirmed invasive in Alabama: USGS NAS documents 10 established nonindigenous occurrences in the state, and Dauphin Island alone accounts for 10 of the species’ recorded sightings here, the largest single-site concentration in this rank tier and a strong match with the coastal marsh habitat this South American rodent has colonized across the Gulf Coast.
Records peak in April (9 sightings), with the rest of the year scattered thin across seven other months and complete silence from August through September, a pattern too uneven to describe a clean seasonal cycle beyond confirming coypu activity concentrates around the state’s coastal wetlands.
