From beast of burden to desert outlaw

Miners, ranchers, and settlers hauled gear into the driest corners of the American West on the backs of donkeys. A burro can carry a load and go without water far longer than most horses can. Domestication happened thousands of years ago in northeastern Africa, where the species’ wild ancestor, the African wild ass, still survives in small numbers today. When American pack animals wandered off, got turned loose, or were simply no longer needed, some found the desert to their liking and stayed. Their descendants are the feral burros that still roam parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and other western states.

The word burro doesn’t mark a different species. It’s just Equus asinus living free instead of behind a fence, and ranchers across the Southwest have used the term for generations. A national page has to cover both animals at once: the working donkey kept as livestock and the feral burro that answers to nobody.

Spotting a donkey at a glance

A donkey reads smaller and narrower than a domestic horse, with a big head, long upright ears, and a stiff mane that never grows past a few inches. Coat color varies widely, from pale gray to near-black. Many donkeys also carry a dark stripe down the spine, crossed by a second stripe over the shoulders that forms a faint cross.

The tail settles most identification questions. A horse’s tail grows long and full from the base. A donkey’s tail stays short and coarse until it ends in a tufted switch, almost like a cow’s. Add the loud, two-part bray, and there isn’t much room left for confusion, even with a mule standing nearby.

Built for a landscape that punishes bigger animals

Desert basins across the Southwest suit a burro well. The species tolerates heat, coarse forage, and long stretches between drinks better than a horse does. Donkeys graze on grass when it’s available after rain, but they’ll also browse shrubs and strip leaves off thorny plants. They chew through pods that a choosier grazer would skip, since their tough lips and blunt incisors handle spines that put off other livestock.

Water still runs the show. A free-ranging herd tends to build its whole day around a spring, tank, or wash, then fan out across nearby slopes to feed before returning. That habit explains why burro trails radiate so visibly from desert water sources, worn in by years of repeated foot traffic.

Slow to breed, quick to recover from a bad year

A jenny carries a foal for nearly a year and almost always delivers a single youngster; twins are rare and risky for both mother and offspring. Foals stand and start following their mothers within hours, which matters when a band needs to move between shade and water on a hot afternoon. Nursing continues for months, and a young jenny won’t usually breed successfully until her second or third year.

That slow pace doesn’t stop a herd from growing when conditions turn favorable. Donkeys are long-lived for their size, and well-kept animals often reach their twenties or thirties, with a few outlasting that by a wide margin. A population with reliable water and light predation can expand steadily even though each female raises only one foal at a time.

A protected animal that still divides opinion

Feral burros aren’t judged as wildlife the way a native desert species would be. On public land, they fall under a federal law that protects existing herds while allowing periodic gathers, adoption programs, and fertility control to manage their numbers. That protection sits uneasily alongside the animal’s ecological footprint: burros can trample fragile spring edges, browse out streamside plants, and crowd smaller native animals away from scarce water.

The tension isn’t going away soon. Land managers see a non-native grazer stressing desert water sources; many visitors see a tough, likeable animal that’s been part of the Southwest’s working history for two centuries. Both views hold some truth, and the debate over how many burros a given basin can support keeps playing out one herd at a time.
