Eastern moles spend nearly their whole lives underground, pushing through soil in tunnels built for hunting earthworms, grubs, and beetle larvae rather than for travel. That underground habit means this species isn’t often spotted directly in Illinois; most records here come from surface signs, like fresh mole hills, rather than the animal itself.

Illinois reports rise sharply each spring, peaking in June, with April and May close behind. Wet soil after spring rain likely pushes more worms upward and moles closer to the surface, and softer ground also makes their tunneling easier to notice.

Shawnee National Forest, Mississippi Palisades State Park, and Matthiessen State Park hold the most records, a set of wooded and bluff habitats where digging conditions stay favorable. With 228 records logged since 2000, the species is native to Illinois and considered secure both in-state and across its range.
