Eastern red bats roost alone in tree foliage, where their reddish fur and tucked posture can resemble a dead leaf. Alabama’s records highlight the hardwood-rich landscapes of Bankhead and Talladega national forests and Little River Canyon, but migrating and foraging bats may appear wherever trees border open flight space.
Reports peak in April–May and again in September, a pattern consistent with seasonal movement as well as summer activity. Watch from a clearing at dusk rather than searching roost foliage; minimizing disturbance is especially important for a species with a vulnerable global rank.
