The eastern red bat is a rare and noteworthy Colorado record. Open occurrence databases hold just 17 Colorado records, because the state sits at the far western edge of a range centered on the forests of the eastern and central United States.
A tree bat at the edge of its range
Unlike the cave bats most people picture, the eastern red bat roosts alone out in the open, hanging in living foliage wrapped in its own furred tail membrane so that it looks like a dead, curled leaf. That habit ties it to trees, and in Colorado its scattered records fall along the eastern plains and the Front Range corridor, where cottonwood-lined rivers and town shade trees offer the leafy roosts it needs at the dry western limit of its distribution.
The seasonal gap is migration, not sleep
Colorado’s records appear only from late spring into early fall and vanish completely through the winter, and that blank is the whole point of this bat’s biology. Rather than hibernating in place like the state’s cave bats, the red bat is a long-distance migrant that heads south when cold sets in, so the empty winter record is a population that has physically departed, not one gone dormant underground. That migratory strategy has also largely spared the species from white-nose syndrome, the cave fungus that has hammered Colorado’s hibernating bats.
A conservation standout
Among the state’s small mammals this one carries real conservation weight: NatureServe ranks its Colorado breeding population Imperiled (S2B), against a globally Vulnerable (G3) rank, even though it is native and unlisted at the state framework level. Wind turbines, which kill migratory tree bats in disproportionate numbers during fall migration, are the clearest modern pressure on it.
