Eastern red bats carry a NatureServe S4 apparently secure rank in Iowa, though the species’ G3 global rank reflects broader range-wide vulnerability, largely from wind-turbine mortality during migration. GBIF specimen data (59 records) outnumbers iNaturalist sightings (15) roughly four to one, since this solitary, foliage-roosting bat is harder to photograph than to detect through acoustic or capture surveys.
Records cluster in July, 4 of the 9 monthly-tallied sightings, tracking peak summer activity when maternity colonies are active, with smaller bumps in April and September likely marking the bat’s spring arrival and fall departure from the state.
