Reading the gray collar
A gray wash over the cheeks, nape, and shoulders is what separates this chipmunk from its western relatives. Neotamias cinereicollis carries the usual chipmunk face pattern of dark and pale stripes through the eye, but its collar and shoulder tone read cooler and grayer than in nearby species. Adults run about 8 to 9.5 inches long. They weigh roughly 2 to 2.6 ounces, a size shared by several southwestern chipmunks, so build alone doesn’t settle an identification.
The clearest clues come from side-by-side comparison. Cliff chipmunk looks flatter and grayer overall, with weaker back stripes and no contrasting collar, and it favors drier, rockier ground. Colorado chipmunk runs warmer, with rusty flanks and a brighter face that never reads gray. Uinta chipmunk can share the same high forest, but its shoulder area stays a duller gray-brown instead of showing crisp contrast, and its outer stripes fade before reaching the hips. Least chipmunk is smaller and slimmer still, often seen with its tail held upright while it races across open ground rather than working timber and rock.

A narrow mountain range
In the United States the species holds to a compact block of mountains in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico, including the Mogollon Rim, the White Mountains, and the San Francisco Peaks. Of 178 records logged since 2000, 148 come from Arizona and 30 from New Mexico, a split that tracks how much more of this mountain belt lies inside Arizona’s borders.
Elevation data confirm the pattern. Recorded sightings run from about 5,900 feet up to nearly 12,500 feet, but they cluster hardest between 6,600 and 8,500 feet, with the midpoint close to 7,500 feet. That band lines up with ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and spruce-fir forest, the cool high country the species depends on. Its recorded habitat also includes some forest-edge and grassland-edge sites, but those sit at the border of the mountain forest rather than replacing it. Away from this belt the species is essentially absent; a gray-collared chipmunk in the wild is a mountain animal first.
Structure at ground level matters as much as elevation. Logs, stumps, boulders, exposed roots, and fallen branches all give the chipmunk cover as it moves between feeding sites, and it climbs into trees readily even though it spends much of the day working the ground and low wood.
Diet, caching, and a mountain winter
Gray-collared chipmunks are diurnal and solitary, active through the day rather than mainly at dawn and dusk. Acorns, fir cone seeds, berries, and other plant seeds make up most of the diet, with tubers, roots, fungi, and the occasional insect rounding it out. Cheek pouches let an individual gather a large load in one trip and haul it back to a burrow or a scattered cache tucked into a hole or crevice. Spreading food across many small caches this way means a single raided stash doesn’t cost the animal its whole winter supply.
Winter brings a real slowdown. The species can enter hibernation, though it isn’t a strict deep sleeper the way some ground squirrels are, and mild stretches can bring it briefly back above the snow. Through the worst weather it stays in the nest and lives off what it stored earlier in the year. Monthly observation counts reflect this rhythm directly: sightings sit close to zero in December and January, climb through spring, peak from June through September, and fall away again by November.

Breeding on a short clock
Breeding runs on the mountain calendar rather than a fixed date, starting in late spring and continuing into early summer as snow clears from den sites. Gestation lasts about 30 to 33 days, and a litter typically holds five young. The nest is a rounded structure lined with grass and other soft plant stems, tucked underground, under a log or rock, among tree roots, or inside a cavity. Young stay below ground through their early weeks and aren’t weaned until they’re around six weeks old, after which they start learning the same routine of short trips between food and cover that will shape the rest of their lives.
Conservation across a small footprint
The IUCN lists the gray-collared chipmunk as Least Concern, a reflection of how common it can be within its own mountain forests rather than a claim about how far it ranges. That range stays genuinely small, limited to a cluster of Arizona and New Mexico peaks, which leaves the species more exposed to forest-level change than its Least Concern label suggests. Stand-replacing wildfire, extended drought, and the slow upward push of conifer zones as the climate warms can all thin or fragment the cool, structured forest floor this chipmunk needs. None of that has moved its conservation status yet, but tracking how the population responds to fire and drought across these specific ranges would say more about its future than a single broad designation can.
