Harbor seals are best sought on Rhode Island’s cold-season coast, hauled out on rocks and sandbars where they can rest between feeding trips. Waters around Block Island, the Narragansett Bay reserve, and Prudence Island account for many records; a boat trip or a distant shoreline viewpoint is usually more productive than searching a busy beach.
Although the data include reports throughout the year, the clear peak from December through March matches the main seal-watching season. Scan at low tide with binoculars and distinguish a rounded head and nostrils that form a shallow V. Remain well back from hauled-out seals and never place yourself between one and the water.
