Humpback whales feeding off Rhode Island are part of the Gulf of Maine population that migrates south each winter to Caribbean breeding grounds, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge’s position nearest open Atlantic water accounts for 4 of the state’s 13 records, the most of any site. NatureServe lists the state population SNRN, unranked, reflecting how little dedicated tracking exists for whales passing through Rhode Island waters specifically versus the wider migratory population.
Records cluster from June through September, six of the 13 sightings, tracking the months humpbacks spend feeding on schooling fish and krill along the Northeast shelf before heading south; a lone January record hints at occasional winter presence outside the usual feeding season.
