Long-finned pilot whales travel in tight, cohesive pods often numbering dozens of animals, and Massachusetts’ history with the species includes some of the largest mass strandings recorded on the East Coast, drawing on the same social bonds that make the species easy to spot as a group and vulnerable to running aground together on Cape Cod’s shallow, curving shoreline.
Records peak sharply in December, more than four times the March low, with a secondary rise in July, a pattern that likely reflects both seasonal movement and the timing of stranding events rather than a single clean migration window. NatureServe ranks the species S4, apparently secure, in Massachusetts, a healthier status than several of the state’s other whale and dolphin records.
