Long-tailed weasels are Indiana’s largest weasel species, hunting mice and voles almost exclusively and following prey into whatever field, marsh edge, or brush pile holds the densest rodent population, which is why records near Indiana Dunes National Park, Kankakee Sands, and Pokagon State Park trace grassland and wetland edges rather than deep forest.
With 133 records, this is one of the better-documented predators in this rank range, and records climb sharply into a March peak, more than four times the December low, tracking the stretch when this year’s kits are old enough to hunt alongside their mother and become easier to spot. NatureServe rates the species S4, apparently secure, statewide.
