Long-tailed weasels are Montana’s largest weasel species, hunting mice and voles almost exclusively and following prey into whatever wetland edge, shoreline, or riverbank cover holds the densest rodent population, which is why records near Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Flathead Lake, and the Missouri River corridor trace water-adjacent habitat rather than dry high country.
Records climb through spring to a July peak, nearly seven times the May low, tracking the stretch when this year’s kits are old enough to hunt alongside their mother and become easier to spot. NatureServe rates the species secure (S5) in Montana, even though its lean, elongated build keeps it naturally hard to notice compared with the state’s larger predators.
