The margay is built to live in trees, with ankles that rotate almost completely backward so it can climb down a trunk headfirst like a squirrel, a trick almost no other cat can manage. Rosette markings and large eyes suited to night vision mark this small spotted cat, whose range barely reaches the United States at all. Confirmed US records sit entirely in Texas, at the northern edge of a range that runs deep into Mexico and Central and South America.

An ankle built for climbing headfirst

Most cats climb up trees easily enough but scramble awkwardly coming back down. The margay solves that problem with an ankle joint that rotates nearly 180 degrees. That flexibility lets it grip a trunk and descend headfirst, jump between branches, and even hang from a single hind foot. Add oversized eyes on a body roughly the size of a large house cat, plus a coat of dark rosettes over tawny fur, and the margay looks built almost entirely for life above the forest floor.

A tropical cat clinging to the US border

Margays range across a huge stretch of the Americas, from northern Mexico through Central America deep into South America. Almost none of that range crosses into the United States. Every confirmed US record sits in Texas, likely reflecting a handful of animals near the southern brush country rather than any established northern population. A margay this far north is operating at the very edge of what its range can support.

A hunter that can fake a call

Margays hunt mostly small mammals and birds alone at night, moving through the canopy far more than most cats their size. Researchers in the Amazon have documented margays mimicking the distress calls of young pied tamarin monkeys closely enough to draw curious adults within striking range, a rare example of vocal deception recorded in a wild cat. That kind of hunting trick fits an animal that spends so much of its life off the ground, working prey it can’t simply outrun on open terrain.

A forest specialist losing ground

The IUCN classifies the margay as Near Threatened, a step above species considered secure, largely because of forest loss across its range. Unlike some small cats that adapt to open or disturbed land, margays depend heavily on continuous forest cover to hunt and den safely off the ground. Clearing tropical and subtropical forest for agriculture and development steadily shrinks the habitat this cat needs. That slow, steady loss is a bigger long-term threat to the species than any single local population count could show.
