Cinereus shrews live beneath leaf litter, logs, and moss in New Hampshire’s moist woods, from the Connecticut River valley to the Lakes Region and northern forests. Their tiny size and largely hidden life make purposeful viewing difficult; most records come from mammal surveys or chance encounters. Damp forest floors in lake state parks and wildlife management areas provide suitable habitat.
They remain active year-round beneath the ground layer and snow. Reports are concentrated from June through September, when field surveys and above-ground movement make these shrews easier to detect.
