Rusty underparts and a frosted tail
This is a large tree squirrel, about 20 to 22 inches long and roughly 1.3 to 2 pounds. The back is grizzled gray-brown, the underside has a yellow, orange, or rusty wash, and the tail is long, bushy, and frosted with pale hair over darker tones. The ears are rounded and lack the long black tufts of Abert’s squirrel.

The most likely visual confusions are other tree squirrels. Abert’s squirrel is gray with a white belly and tall ear tufts. Arizona gray squirrel has a cleaner gray body and white belly, without the warm rusty underparts. Fox squirrel can look similar in size and color, but in Arizona the native single-range animal is the Mexican fox squirrel of the Chiricahuas.
A single-mountain-range US distribution
The Chiricahua Mountains are the entire native United States range. Records cluster around canyon systems such as Cave Creek, South Fork, and nearby pine-oak and streamside corridors. Outside that sky island, the species continues south into Mexico. This makes the US population geographically small even though the species as a whole isn’t restricted to the United States. The distinction matters for honest range writing: the species isn’t an Arizona-wide squirrel, but the Arizona population is still part of a larger Mexican lineage that reaches its northern limit in one mountain range.
Habitat is Madrean: oak, pine, walnut, sycamore, Douglas fir, and mixed-conifer elements arranged along canyons and slopes. The species favors open understory, mature trees, and canyon bottoms or slopes where food trees persist. Elevation in the prepared record sits mostly in the middle mountain band rather than the desert floor or the highest spruce-fir crest. That middle band is important because it connects Mexican pine-oak ecology with Arizona’s sky-island geography, creating a small northern outpost separated from other populations by arid lowlands.
Quiet habits in the canopy
Mexican fox squirrels are diurnal and active through the year. They are quieter than many familiar tree squirrels, often freezing or slipping around trunks rather than scolding loudly. When alarmed, an individual may bark or chuck from cover, but silence and stillness are common defenses.

Food includes pinyon seeds, pine and fir seeds, acorns, walnuts, fruits, fungi, buds, roots, bulbs, insects, and occasional bird eggs or nestlings. Some accounts describe scatter-hoarding, while others report little caching compared with other Sciurus squirrels. That mixed picture fits a species that remains less studied than widespread eastern and western tree squirrels.
Reproduction and daily life
Nests are leafy dreys or tree cavities, often placed high in mature trees. Females produce small litters, and the prepared facts list one young as the recorded litter-size value, while broader accounts allow one to three. Gestation lasts about six weeks. Young remain dependent for a long period compared with chipmunks, and the female provides the parental care.
Home ranges are large for a squirrel, especially in low-density canyon habitat. Individuals may spend long stretches out of sight in the canopy or on shaded slopes. This is one reason the species can feel scarce even where it is established. A quiet squirrel high in oak or pine can be present long before movement in the tail or a short alarm note gives it away.
Fire and the future of the Chiricahua population
The IUCN lists Mexican fox squirrel as Least Concern globally, but the US conservation story is narrower. A single mountain range can be changed by one severe fire, prolonged drought, or loss of large canyon trees. The 2011 Horseshoe Two Fire made that vulnerability plain, even though observations continue in familiar Chiricahua drainages.
The species’ best protection in the United States is the persistence of mature Madrean pine-oak and streamside canyon forest. As long as those canyons keep large seed-producing trees, shaded travel routes, and patchy low-severity fire structure, the Chiricahua population can remain the northern outpost of a mostly Mexican squirrel. Because there is no second US mountain range to buffer losses, every confirmed canyon population carries more weight than a similar record would for a widespread squirrel.
