Montane vole reports favor New Mexico’s cool, grassy pockets. Valles Caldera is the clearest fit, with broad high-elevation meadows, while the Bosque del Apache reference points toward wet grass beside a much lower desert river corridor.
June rises first, followed by a stronger August and September cluster. That uneven summer pattern can reflect when crews work in vole habitat, not a statewide change in numbers. Wet meadows are scattered and often hard to reach, so blank areas shouldn’t be treated as absence.
