Washington’s mountain goat records concentrate along the Cascade Range, from North Cascades National Park south through Mount Rainier National Park, exactly where the steep alpine cliffs and talus slopes this species depends on rise above treeline.

Mountain goats are built for that terrain: sure-footed climbers with soft, gripping hooves, they graze alpine grasses, sedges, and lichens on ledges few predators can reach, and they shed a thick winter coat for a lighter one each summer.

Records peak from June through August, when goats are most visible above treeline and more observers are out in the high country; sightings drop off sharply once snow returns and animals move to sheltered ground. Washington’s mountain goats carry a NatureServe rank of S2, Imperiled, even though the species overall isn’t threatened, a sign the state’s population needs closer watching than the national picture suggests.
