Muskrats are tied to still or slow South Carolina waters with emergent vegetation: marshes, pond margins, canals, and quiet river edges. Congaree and wet areas within Sumter and Carolina Sandhills offer places to check for bank burrows, feeding platforms, tracks, or a low-swimming animal at dawn and dusk.
Most reports fall from March through May, with only scattered observations during the rest of the year. The small dataset makes that spring peak useful for timing a search, but not for defining statewide abundance.
