The complete county distribution, spread across 65 Iowa counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

North American deer mice are small, nocturnal habitat generalists associated with fields, woodland edges, and other dry ground across Iowa. They are common in scientific sampling but rarely noticed on ordinary wildlife walks, which explains the sharp contrast between 499 GBIF records and only 10 iNaturalist records.

The Driftless Area, Upper Mississippi corridor, and DeSoto refuge encompass suitable habitats, but none is a practical destination for visually searching for mice. Records commonly come from traps, specimens, or incidental indoor encounters; wild rodents should not be handled because of bite and disease risk.

The apparent July and August peak is based on a small public-observation series and likely reflects survey timing. It should not be interpreted as proof that deer mice are absent or inactive during other months.
