Seasonality

No dated South Carolina records from 2000 to 2026.

Occurrence databases hold no South Carolina deer mouse records from 2000 to 2026. The likeliest ground for one is the state’s Blue Ridge corner in Oconee, Greenville, and Pickens counties, around Sumter National Forest’s mountain districts, the Jocassee Gorges, and Caesars Head. That’s classic deer mouse country: a largely northern and western species that reaches the Deep South mainly along the Appalachians.

Any report that does turn up deserves a careful look. White-footed mice look nearly identical and are far more widespread in the state, so a deer mouse reported from the lowlands is the kind of question a thin record can’t settle.

NatureServe ranks the species secure in South Carolina, but its documented footprint since 2000 is empty.
