Virginia’s records for this mouse track the state’s mountainous west, and nearly all of them come from Giles County and Jefferson National Forest, with a few more from Warren County and the ridge country along the Blue Ridge Parkway. That forested, brushy terrain fits a species that also does well in old fields and rocky ground, using burrows, logs, tree cavities, and even abandoned bird nests for shelter.

This mouse’s white belly and feet set it apart from the grayer, bare-tailed house mouse it’s sometimes confused with, though separating it from white-footed mice in the same Virginia woods can take a close look at tail pattern and ear size. It forages mainly after dark for seeds, fungi, and insects, carrying food back to a hidden cache rather than eating everything on the spot, a habit that helps it get through lean stretches of winter.

Records stay high from April through September and taper through the colder months, likely tracking a mix of breeding activity and how much survey effort happens outdoors that time of year. Because this mouse breeds fast and its numbers can swing with seed crops and weather, a busy month of records says more about detection than about how many mice are actually out there.
