North American least shrews carry a NatureServe S5 secure rank in South Carolina, and the record leans toward GBIF (28 of 30 records) over iNaturalist, since a shrew this tiny and secretive is far more likely to turn up in a trap than in a photograph.
December alone accounts for 12 of the 30 records, a striking 40 percent of the entire year’s total, with February, June, August, and September showing zero records; that swing likely tracks the timing of a concentrated winter trapping survey rather than any real seasonal spike in the shrew’s own activity, since this species doesn’t hibernate.
