Nebraska’s northern myotis records concentrate in the Pine Ridge escarpment and the Niobrara River valley, where the state’s closest approximation of true forest survives in a landscape otherwise dominated by grass. The Niobrara valley is known for the way ponderosa pine, eastern hardwoods, and relict boreal-forest trees crowd together along one river corridor, giving this species the mix of roost trees a Great Plains grassland state rarely offers.
A bat that needs bark and cool stone
This species roosts under loose tree bark and in cavities through summer, then needs cool, stable caves or mines to make it through winter. Nebraska has little of the true cave country that shelters the species across the Appalachians and upper Midwest, so Nebraska’s bats likely lean on rock crevices and old mine workings in the Pine Ridge’s canyon country rather than deep limestone caverns.
A record pattern shaped by two different seasons
Nebraska’s reports spike twice, once in January and again across July and August. That split likely reflects two different kinds of survey effort rather than one activity pattern. Winter surveys of cave and mine roosts catch dormant bats in January, while summer surveys near forest streams catch bats out hunting insects in July and August, with almost nothing recorded in between.

NatureServe ranks the northern myotis S1, critically imperiled in Nebraska, well below its G2 global rank. That reflects both a naturally marginal foothold in the state’s limited forest habitat and the toll white-nose syndrome has taken on this species everywhere it hibernates in caves. Nebraska sits at the edge of a forest bat’s range in a grassland state, and that edge position shows in how few records exist.
