Piute ground squirrel records track Utah’s Great Basin country almost exactly: Bonneville Salt Flats, Great Salt Lake, and the Stansbury Mountains cover the salt-desert flats and dry mountain edges this squirrel needs for open digging ground and low, sparse cover.

Reports build fast each spring and peak hard in May, then fall off a cliff by July. That’s not just an observer pattern. Ground squirrels in this genus are known to go dormant early in summer once the desert dries out, so the drop likely reflects real animal behavior on top of when people are out looking.

Most of Utah’s roughly 535 records come from GBIF-linked survey data rather than iNaturalist. NatureServe rates the species apparently secure in Utah, though it carries no global rank at all, meaning rangewide status hasn’t been formally assessed.
