Prairie voles are known among biologists for something unusual: they often pair up with one mate and share the work of raising pups, a rare habit for a small rodent. Illinois sits well east of the species’ Great Plains stronghold, and the state’s 252 logged records reflect that edge-of-range position rather than the kind of abundance the vole reaches further west.

Cook County forest preserves, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, and the Des Plaines River corridor are the named spots tied to Illinois reports, places that still hold the dense grass runways this vole needs to move around unseen. November carries by far the heaviest share of records, with December and April also standing out, though that pattern likely says more about survey timing than about when voles are actually most active.

NatureServe ranks the Illinois population S5, secure, and the species remains native rather than introduced here. Still, prairie voles depend entirely on grass cover surviving mowing and grazing, so a strong record count in one preserve doesn’t guarantee the same in the next unmowed field over.
