Shadow chipmunks favor dense, shaded conifer forest, exactly the kind of cover found around Cape Perpetua Scenic Area’s coastal forest and the Oregon Dunes’ timbered fringe, though this species prefers a heavier canopy than the open, sun-exposed dunes themselves.
Only 3 iNaturalist records exist in Oregon’s current window, clustered in May, July, and September, too few to draw out a real seasonal pattern. NatureServe ranks the species S4, apparently secure, and like other chipmunks it’s active by day, which makes the thinness of the record more a reflection of limited survey effort than genuine scarcity.
