A voice before a sighting
Most small Alaska rodents stay silent and rely on camouflage. The singing vole gives itself away with sound instead. It delivers a sharp, high-pitched call from a rock or a burrow entrance, often repeated as an alarm when something intrudes on its territory. That vocal habit is unusual among North American voles. It’s what gave the species its common name, and it makes this one of the easier Arctic rodents to detect even when it stays out of sight.
Rocky, well-drained ground over marshy tundra
Where the tundra vole seeks out wet meadows, the singing vole does the opposite. It favors drier, rockier alpine and subalpine slopes and well-drained tundra, ground that sheds water fast after rain or snowmelt. That habitat split is one of the more reliable ways to sort Alaska’s small tundra rodents without ever getting a close look at either one.
Haypiles: a pika habit, borrowed
Come late summer, singing voles cut grasses, sedges, and other tundra plants and stack them into small haypiles near their burrows, letting the cuttings dry before hauling them underground for winter. It’s the same food-caching strategy pikas use on rockslides farther south, arrived at independently by a very different small mammal facing the same problem: a long snow season with nothing green left to eat. Arctic willow is among the plants documented in its diet, alongside the grasses and sedges that make up the bulk of what it eats and stores.
Breeding hard through a short Arctic summer
A female’s gestation lasts about three weeks, and litters can run as large as 14 pups, born into a breeding season that has to wrap up before the snow returns. Multiple litters in a single summer are typical for the genus, and young from an early litter can be capable of breeding themselves before the season ends. That pace lets a population rebuild quickly after a hard winter, a common strategy among Arctic voles living on a calendar this tight. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern, and its upland habitat keeps it largely clear of the wetland and agricultural pressures that affect some of its lowland relatives.
