A Brown-Eared Myotis In A Crowded Genus
Many western Myotis look like small brown bats until the useful details come into view. Southwestern myotis is on the larger end of the local long-eared group, with brown flight membranes and ears rather than the blackish face and ears that can mark long-eared myotis. It also lacks the comb of stiff hairs along the tail membrane that gives fringed myotis its name. Those two comparisons matter because all three species can occur in the same broad region, and casual night sightings rarely show enough detail for certainty.

Color alone is a weak shortcut. Flash, age, wear, and dust can turn one small bat gray, tan, or warm brown in different photos. Better clues are the combination of ear size, brown membranes, smooth tail membrane edge, and range. Even then, field photos often deserve a cautious identification. Bat biologists may use measurements, skull and jaw characters, acoustic recordings, and local species lists to separate southwestern myotis from its close neighbors.
Where The U.S. Range Narrows
In North America, southwestern myotis reaches its northern limit in the United States. The documented U.S. range is limited to Arizona and New Mexico, especially the mountainous southeast of Arizona and the southwestern to central mountains of New Mexico. Recent georeferenced records are sparse, which fits a species whose main distribution lies south of the international border and whose U.S. presence is tied to broken mountain terrain rather than broad lowlands.
Mexico carries most of the range. From there, the species extends through a mix of montane forest, arid woodland, thornscrub, and tropical highland settings, with Guatemala marking the southern end known from the literature. The U.S. portion should be read as a northern edge, not the center of abundance.
Cliffs, Woodland Edges, And Water After Dark
Southwestern myotis is often associated with arid woodlands, desert scrub, oak woodland, pinyon-juniper, sycamore and cottonwood corridors, and conifer forest. That habitat list sounds broad, but the useful pattern is structure plus insects plus water. Rocky cliffs, canyons, tree cavities, mines, caves, and buildings can provide shelter, while nearby washes, streams, tanks, or streamside strips concentrate night-flying prey.

The elevation pattern reinforces that borderland story. Records span low desert margins to high mountain country, but many recent detections sit in mid- and high-elevation terrain where forest, cliffs, and seasonal insects overlap. In the United States, that often means Sky Island canyons, ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer edges, oak drainages, and rugged New Mexico ranges rather than open desert flats.
Roosting biology is still not well documented. Night roosts have been reported in buildings, mines, and caves, and individuals have been found using tree cavities such as old woodpecker holes and rotten sycamore branches. The lack of many known day roosts is part of the species’ challenge: a bat can be present in a mountain drainage and still leave little obvious sign during daylight.
How It Hunts
Southwestern myotis is nocturnal and insectivorous, with moths forming a major part of the known diet. It isn’t only an open-air chaser. Its large ears and maneuverable flight suit a gleaning style, where a bat listens and echolocates near bark, walls, trunks, or foliage, then plucks prey from a surface or briefly lands to take it.

Activity tends to peak after sunset, especially during warm months when moths and other insects are available. Water matters because insect-eating bats lose moisture quickly and because streamside edges produce prey. Reproductive females may concentrate more strongly along streams, while males can spend more time in upland or marginal habitats. That division makes the species harder to summarize from a handful of captures: different sexes and seasons can make the same landscape look more or less occupied.
Seasonal movement is likely part of the picture, but the winter range and hibernation sites remain poorly known. Like many temperate Myotis, it probably uses protected hibernacula or deep roosts during cold periods, then becomes easier to detect from spring through early fall.
One Pup In A Short Warm Season
The reproductive pace is slow. Females usually produce one pup per year, with births reported in June or early July in the northern part of the range and later farther south. That single-pup strategy is typical of many bats, but it means adult survival and stable maternity habitat matter more than high yearly output.
Young bats are born small and dependent, then must grow quickly enough to fly before the season turns. Warm roosts, steady insects, and low disturbance all help. If a maternity roost is lost or repeatedly disturbed, a local group can’t replace young as quickly as rodents or rabbits can. The recorded lifespan is at least about three years, and close relatives in the genus can live much longer, so each adult female represents several possible breeding seasons.
Conservation At The Northern Edge
The IUCN rates southwestern myotis as Least Concern, reflecting its broader range and lack of evidence for rapid global decline. That status doesn’t make the species easy to monitor in the United States. A narrow northern range, few public records, poorly known winter sites, and confusing overlap with other Myotis all leave real knowledge gaps.
The practical conservation issues are the same ones that follow many southwestern bats: loss or disturbance of roosts, poorly planned mine closures, removal of cavity trees, pesticide effects on insect prey, water scarcity, and disease risk in hibernating bat communities. White-nose syndrome has reshaped bat conservation across North America, and even species without major documented losses are watched more carefully where they use caves, mines, or cool winter shelters.
For this bat, the clearest national story is not rarity for its own sake. It is a small, long-eared hunter reaching the edge of its range in a narrow band of U.S. mountains, where a single canyon can combine roost cracks, moth flights, trees, rock, and water. Protecting that whole night landscape matters more than any one label on a range map.
