The beaked whale with crossed teeth
Stejneger’s beaked whale has the compact, smooth outline typical of its close relatives. A low forehead slopes into a narrow beak, and a small hooked fin sits far back. Adults are dark gray, brown, or nearly black, often with pale scars. Younger whales may show a clearer dark cap and lighter underside.
Adult males carry the decisive feature. A pair of large teeth erupts from the arched lower jaw and points inward, sometimes extending across the closed beak. Females and young whales have teeth beneath the gums, so they lack that obvious clue. At sea, a short view of the back and fin often isn’t enough for species-level identification.
Scarring grows more noticeable in mature males. The marks probably come from contests in which the projecting teeth rake another whale’s skin. Those teeth aren’t needed for feeding. The whale captures soft prey by suction.
Cold, deep water across the North Pacific
This species occupies cold-temperate and subarctic waters from the Sea of Japan and Russian Far East to Alaska and the eastern North Pacific. In US waters, Alaska is the clear center of documented occurrence. Records extend south along the West Coast, including rare California evidence, but a southern report doesn’t mean the whale regularly lives close to shore there.
Stejneger’s beaked whales favor deep offshore water on and beyond the continental slope. They often travel alone or in tight groups. When approached, they may turn away from vessels, surface without much splash, and disappear on another dive. Those traits help explain why strandings, photographs, and acoustic detections contribute so much of the available evidence.
Reports from Alaska span much of the year, with acoustic detections especially useful when weather limits visual surveys. Still, detection rates reflect listening locations and survey effort. They don’t provide a simple measure of abundance across the entire ocean.
A dive cycle built around deep prey
The whales make a series of shallower dives between longer descents. On deep dives, they hunt small fish, squid, and other soft-bodied animals. Echolocation clicks help them search in darkness, while suction draws prey into the mouth. The visible teeth of males play no role in chewing.
Groups can include mixed ages and sexes, though some gatherings may be separated by age or sex. Direct observation is limited, so the stability of these groups isn’t well understood. Females bear a single calf. Calving appears to occur from spring into early autumn, but a firm breeding calendar would require many more observations.
Avoidance of vessels creates a difficult research problem. A whale can be present yet pass unnoticed, and an unidentified beaked-whale sighting may never be assigned to this species. Skull shape, erupted teeth, photographs, and genetic samples provide stronger identification than a distant fin.
Protection doesn’t remove offshore threats
Stejneger’s beaked whales are protected in US waters under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Reliable abundance and trend estimates remain unavailable, so protection operates with an incomplete picture of the population.
Entanglement in drift nets and gillnets is a documented concern across parts of the range. Swallowed marine debris can block or injure the digestive tract. Human-made underwater noise may interrupt feeding, communication, or navigation, all of which matter greatly to a deep-diving animal that relies on sound.
Strandings can reveal anatomy, diet, age, and cause of death, but they are an uneven window into life offshore. The records below should be read accordingly: Alaska’s dense cluster reflects the species’ northern distribution and substantial survey history, while isolated southern points mark rare evidence rather than a continuous coastal population.
